Health-care executive Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick was certified Tuesday as the winner of a special Democratic primary election for a South Florida congressional seat that opened when longtime Congressman Alcee Hastings died this year.
The state Elections Canvassing Commission, made up of Gov. Ron DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody and Chief Financial Jimmy Patronis, certified the results of the Nov. 2 Democratic and Republican primaries in Congressional District 20 in Broward and Palm Beach counties.
The 11-candidate Democratic primary required machine and manual recounts, with Cherfilus-McCormick defeating Broward County Commissioner Dale Holness by five votes, according to the state Division of Elections website.
Cherfilus-McCormick will face Republican Jason Mariner in the Jan. 11 special general election in the overwhelmingly Democratic district.
